The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about the over-the-counter versions of certain medications that contain sildenafil, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Viagra. FDA has warned consumers not to buy these drugs from unlicensed sources, such as online sellers that do not require a prescription.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration says sildenafil, sold as Revatio, is available only by prescription.
Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
It works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow and helping to achieve and maintain an erection.
Sildenafil may cause an erection to fail, causing damage or infertility. This could include low blood pressure, fainting, vision problems, ringing in the ears, loss of hearing or vision, prolonged erections and priapism, the treatment for which can be life-threatening.
